Your stay in Arequipa, at 1,335 masl, will allow you to get used to the height and, above all, to enjoy the appeals diversity such as the Cathedral or the Santa Catalina Monastery in the city, or the districts situated in the Arequipa countryside. The road to the Chivay locality (about 4 hours away from Arequipa) starts from Arequipa. This is the entrance to the Colca Valley, in which impressive volcanos and landscapes stand out. In Chivay, you will have a variety of possibilities to walk through the valley and reach the Condor Cross vantage point, from which you will have a spectcular view of the condors flight and the depth of the Colca Canyon.
Day 1: Arequipa
Transfer from the airport to your hotel. In the afternoon, we will visit the city of Arequipa, called the “White City”, for its white color from the volcanic rock (ashlar). You will visit Yanahuara, Carmen Alto (Chachani viewpoint), the beautiful Convent of Santa Catalina, the Plaza de Armas and the main streets. Accommodation in a hotel.
Day 2: Colca Canyon
We will leave Arequipa at 8:30 a.m. And will head for the Yura road. We will then skirt round the Chachani volcan, before walking through the Cañahuas Pampas and stopping from 10 to 15 minutes there, so that you will be able to appreciate the vicunas that can be seen in their natural environment. We will stop a second time to enjoy the coca mate (kind of coca tea), so that the height won't affect you anymore. This might be useful since we will stand at 3,800 masl. We will continue climbing as far as 4,800 masl (volcanos vantage point).
We will then begin our descent (about 45 minutes long) to the Chivay village. You will be accommodated in the hostel, before having lunch. In the afternoon, we will head for La Calera (swimming pool filled with thermo medicinal waters). To finish the day, we will have dinner, and spend the night at our hotel.
We will have breakfast (5:30 a.m.) before heading for the Condor Cross, from which we will be able to appreciate the Colca Canyon and the condor flight. We will then vsit the Wayrapunko, Andaguilque, and Choquetico vantage points, and the Pinchillo, Maca, Achoma, and Yanque villages, before going to Chivay. We will have lunch and will get ready to go back to the city of Arequipa, which we will reach at about 5 p.m.
